Story: A collaboration between Beam’s Fred Noe and Suntory’s Shinji Fukuyo, this is a straight bourbon partially finished in sherry and other wine casks which was then blended by Fukuyo. The result is a solid whisky that pushes the boundaries of the bourbon category.
Distillery: Beam
Casks: New oak and then a selection of sherry, red wine, and ex-bourbon.
ABV: 47%
Nose: The bourbon and sherry character both come through loud and clear. From the bourbon; plenty of brown sugar, candied nuts, caramel. From the sherry; almonds, raisins, and a dark fruit backbone that hints at sherry funk (but never dives into forest floor). Oatmeal raisin cookies. Old fashioned with extra orange rind. Prunes.
Palate: Beautiful mouthfeel. Pralines, candied pecans, lemon zest, more caramel. Slightly bitter molasses. The back palate highlights the spice character; chili and fresh ground peppercorns. Vanilla. Oak and sweet char finish.
